Make Your Days Count

Make Your Days Count

Kathleen Smith

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12, KJV

We mark our lives by dates. We count down to holidays, appointments, visits, and the next thing we’re looking forward to. Sometimes we count the days until a difficult season will finally be behind us.

There is nothing wrong with looking ahead. But while our attention is fixed on what comes next, we can overlook the life God has placed in our hands today.

“We should make our days count, instead of counting our days.”

That thought invites us to pause and consider how we’re spending the time we’ve been given.

A Heart of Wisdom

Psalm 90 acknowledges both God’s everlasting nature and the briefness of human life. In verse 12, the prayer is for God to teach us to number our days so that we develop wisdom.

Remembering that our time is limited can help us recognize its value. It can clarify what deserves our attention and what we can release.

An argument we’ve been carrying may no longer seem worth feeding. A conversation we’ve postponed may deserve a place in today’s plans. Time with the Lord may need to come before the demands that will gladly consume every available minute.

Wisdom helps us make those choices with care.

Faithfulness in Ordinary Moments

Many of us picture a meaningful life in terms of visible accomplishments. Yet some of the most valuable things we do receive little recognition.

You may spend your day caring for someone who needs the same help again tomorrow. You may quietly pray for a family member, encourage a discouraged friend, or do an honest day’s work when you feel tired.

Those moments deserve our attention.

Ephesians 2:10 describes believers as God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. That gives purpose to the way we move through everyday life. We can look for opportunities to serve in the circumstances we already have.

A meal delivered with kindness, a patient response, or an apology offered sincerely can become an expression of faith.

Making Room for What Matters

A full calendar can leave us feeling productive while the people we love receive only our leftover attention.

This is an invitation to examine our days gently and honestly. Are our commitments reflecting what we value? Have we left room to listen, to pray, and to notice someone else’s need?

Making our days count also includes rest. We are human, with limits God already understands. Receiving rest with gratitude can help us return to our responsibilities with greater patience and care.

On a day when your strength is limited, faithfulness may look very simple. You can speak honestly to God. Receive help. Offer a kind word. Rest without measuring your worth by what you finished.

Begin with Today

We cannot return to yesterday and spend its hours differently. We can bring our regrets to God, receive His forgiveness, and let what we’ve learned shape our next choice.

Perhaps today is the day to make that phone call, put down the screen, or give someone your undivided attention. Perhaps it is time to take one small step toward something God has placed on your heart.

You don’t need to know how every future day will unfold to use this one thoughtfully.

Begin with a simple prayer: “Lord, help me see what matters today.”

Then pay attention. There may be an opportunity to love someone well waiting in the middle of your ordinary routine.

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of this day. Teach me to value my time and use it with wisdom. Help me notice the people around me and respond with patience, generosity, and love. Forgive me for the moments I’ve rushed past what mattered. Give me peace about what I cannot finish and courage to do what You place before me. May the way I live today honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today’s reflection: What is one choice I can make today that reflects what matters most to God?
